How to stop spam being send from my Dad's email AOL account?

My dad has had the same AOL email account for years now and just last year it started to send spam email to all of his AOL contacts. He has a virus protector and this continued to happen even after buying a new PC. The emails are usually about viagra or other inappropriate subjects. Will he need to get a new email account? Please help!!
